The MHRA encourages applications for membership from postgraduate researchers. Postgraduates registered for a higher degree in the modern humanities* are eligible for up to three years’ free membership including a free printed copy of the MHRA Style Guide and up to three years’ free subscription to the online version of one of the following prestigious MHRA journals: The Modern Language Review; The Yearbook of English Studies; Austrian Studies; Portuguese Studies; The Slavonic and East European Review.

Postgraduates seeking to publish articles are encouraged to submit their work to MHRA journals for consideration.

If any postgraduates would like to put their names forward as potential book reviewers for the Modern Language Review, please contact the relevant section editor or editors (contact details are available here under ‘Further Information – View guidelines for submission’), specifying your area or areas of research interest.

The third issue of MHRA Working Papers in the Humanities is due for publication in November 2008.

The interests and views of postgraduate members are important to the Association who would like to ensure that they continue to be represented at MHRA Committee level. This will allow postgraduate members to influence the ways in which the MHRA supports postgraduate studies in the future.

Renewal reminder notices were sent out by e-mail to existing members in November 2007. If you did not receive a reminder and wish to renew your membership for 2008 you should download, complete, and return the application form.

At a time when the pressures on young researchers are increasing, and when the competition for limited resources is becoming increasingly intense, the MHRA is actively seeking ways in which it can use its financial resources, expertise and influence to support the work and professional aspirations of postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers. Already, the MHRA supports the work of young researchers in various ways. It produces a highly regarded Style Guide, which is an essential component of training in research methodology at many Institutes of Higher Education and provides the stylistic model for MA and PhD theses in the humanities. As a member you will receive a free printed copy of this guide, but members and non-members alike can download the Style Guide free of charge here.

The MHRA also produces a dissertations series (MHRA Texts and Dissertations) in which the best recent doctoral research is published with expert editorial guidance.

The MHRA is seeking to expand its role in support of postgraduates and new members of the profession, in the first instance by inviting two postgraduate representatives to advise its Committee.

Membership of the MHRA offers postgraduates the opportunity to participate in a prestigious scholarly organization that unites a broad range of disciplines and embodies the best research and publishing expertise in its constituent fields.

Note: All individual members understand that any MHRA publications received either free of charge or at a reduced rate are exclusively for personal and private use and may not be sold, given away, or exchanged.

*The “modern humanities” includes the modern and medieval languages, literatures, and cultures of Europe (including English and the Slavonic languages, and the cultures of the European diaspora). History, library studies, education and pedagogical subjects, and the medical application of linguistics are excluded.

**This offer is subject to availability, and applications are subject to approval by the Committee of the MHRA. The Association reserves the right to vary the terms of the offer without notice.
